Tesla makes grand Mumbai debut with first showroom launch accompanied with unveiling of Model Y

Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the inauguration of its first showroom in Mumbai. Located in the posh Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the 4,000-square-foot facility signifies the electric car giant’s much-anticipated step into India.
Dubbed the Tesla Experience Centre, this flagship outlet is expected to be followed by additional showrooms in major cities like New Delhi. This expansion comes as Tesla seeks growth in emerging markets amidst slower demand in more established regions.
Situated in BKC, Mumbai’s upscale business hub, the showroom reportedly comes with a steep monthly rental of ₹35 lakh. Exclusive visuals reveal the Tesla-branded exterior and a partially concealed white Tesla vehicle inside the showroom.
This Mumbai location marks Tesla’s first physical footprint in India. While the company has not yet committed to building or assembling vehicles domestically, the launch is seen as a strategic initiative to assess the Indian market’s interest and viability.
The showroom debuts with the Model Y, Tesla’s all-electric SUV. Six units were imported from Shanghai specifically for the launch. Social media visuals show the vehicle arriving on a flatbed truck and undergoing final pre-opening preparations.
For Indian customers, Tesla is showcasing the updated Model Y in a dark grey shade with sleek black wheels and a sporty silhouette. Two trims will be available: Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD. The interior offers a minimalist dual-tone design, a large 15.4-inch central display, wireless charging, USB-C support, voice control, app-based access, and internet connectivity.
The Model Y is priced at ₹59.89 lakh for the RWD variant, reflecting India’s steep import taxes on fully built vehicles, ranging from 70% to 100%.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has frequently criticized India’s high tariffs, urging reductions to make Teslas more accessible to local buyers. However, the Indian government has encouraged Tesla to invest in local manufacturing instead. As of now, no factory announcement has been made.
