PM Narendra Modi receives prestigious national honour from Ghana, strengthening diplomatic ties

On July 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana,’ one of the highest national awards bestowed by Ghana. This prestigious recognition was given in appreciation of Modi’s “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership,” according to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The award was presented by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama during Modi’s visit to the country.
Expressing his gratitude on social media platform X, Modi described receiving the award as a great honour and source of pride. He accepted the accolade on behalf of India’s 140 crore citizens, dedicating it to the aspirations and bright futures of the youth in both nations. Modi highlighted the deep historical ties, rich cultural heritage, and shared democratic values that bind India and Ghana together.
He further emphasized that the award carries significant responsibility, motivating continued efforts to strengthen the friendship and partnership between the two countries. Modi pledged that India would stand steadfastly with Ghana, continuing its role as a trusted friend and development partner.
This award places Modi among an illustrious group of global leaders and personalities who have received the ‘Order of the Star of Ghana,’ including Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, King Charles III, King Mohammed VI, and Giorgio Napolitano.
Modi’s visit marked the first by an Indian prime minister to Ghana in three decades and included extensive discussions with President Mahama. These talks led to an upgrade in India-Ghana relations to a comprehensive partnership level, signifying a new chapter of cooperation and collaboration.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that Modi’s visit and the award reflect the deep and longstanding friendship between the two democracies. The prime minister’s historic state visit is expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral ties, further cementing the bond between India and Ghana on multiple fronts.
This visit is the initial stop on Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour, reinforcing India’s commitment to fostering strong relations across Africa and beyond.
