Woman alleges drugging robbery during train journey, railways issue official response

YouTuber Kanika Devrani recently shared a disturbing experience from her train journey on the Brahmaputra Mail at New Jalpaiguri Junction Railway Station (NJP) in West Bengal. She alleged that she and several fellow passengers were drugged and robbed during the trip. Her detailed account, shared in a video, has sparked widespread concern on social media, with many users tagging IRCTC and West Bengal Police to bring attention to the incident. Northeast Frontier Railways, the authority overseeing NJP, confirmed to HT.com that an investigation is currently in progress.

In an Instagram post accompanying her video, Devrani urged followers to “travel safe.” She reassured her audience in the comments, stating, “I am safe guys and also I have tweeted regarding the same issue. Thank you for your concern.”

In her video, Devrani described how a man without a ticket boarded the 2AC compartment and interacted with some passengers. She reported experiencing a blackout during the journey, only to discover her iPhone, which she had kept under her pillow, was missing. Another passenger also reported losing a phone under similar circumstances.

Devrani further alleged that an individual claiming to be from the Railway Protection Force later contacted her mother from her phone, requesting the device’s password. She also claimed that local police declined to assist her.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway, stated that Devrani is currently in Guwahati. The Railway Protection Force has registered her complaint and is using the CEIR portal to track the stolen phone and apprehend those responsible. He assured that a thorough investigation is underway and strict measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
