AIADMK slams DMK over 25th custodial death, cites temple guard’s tragedy as alarming pattern

Following the alleged custodial death of a temple security guard in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan strongly criticized the DMK government, claiming this incident marks the 25th custodial murder since they came to power. The deceased, Ajith Kumar, who worked as a guard at the Madapuram Kaliamman temple in Thirupuvanam, was taken into custody for questioning regarding a theft case involving nearly 10 sovereigns of gold from a devotee’s vehicle. His family alleges that he died as a result of torture during police interrogation.

Kovai Sathyan accused the police of attempting to erase evidence of brutality by removing items like plastic pipes, chilli powder, and iron rods from the station. He labeled the incident a “custodial murder” and alleged a deliberate cover-up to shield those responsible. Highlighting that Ajith Kumar had no criminal background or medical issues, Sathyan stressed that mere suspensions or transfers are not enough and demanded justice for the victim’s family.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami also condemned the incident, urging the government to initiate a judicial inquiry, punish the guilty, and compensate Kumar’s family. He referenced Chief Minister Stalin’s past comments on custodial deaths, questioning his silence on this matter.

Palaniswami criticized the Chief Minister for failing to control the police force and demanded that a judicial committee led by a district judge be formed to investigate the case. Meanwhile, the Sivaganga SP confirmed that six crime branch personnel involved in Kumar’s interrogation have been suspended pending inquiry. Kumar’s relatives have refused to accept his body and have launched a protest demanding justice.

The case has reignited the debate on police accountability and custodial violence in Tamil Nadu, with the opposition accusing the DMK government of neglecting human rights and enabling systemic abuse through inaction. Calls for transparency, legal reform, and stronger oversight of law enforcement continue to grow amid rising public outrage.
