Flood causes house to collapse into river in northeastern India; dam destroyed amid tragic incident

A tragic incident unfolded in northeastern India’s Assam as a house collapsed into the swollen river, claiming the lives of two young individuals.

The incident took place near the Yamuna River Amid Bridge Construction between Howraghat & Karbi on May 29.

Visuals showed near the Howraghat Bridge, a house collapsed into the river after continuous raining. The force of the overflowing water also caused the artificial dam to break apart. As a result, the bridge, previously sturdy, began to sway, and the crowd gathered on it also felt the tremors.

In a devastating turn of events, the tranquility of the Howraghat  region in Assam was shattered as a house situated adjacent to the Howraghat Bridge succumbed to the forceful currents of the river below. The calamity struck suddenly, triggered by the unexpected overflow of the river which led to the catastrophic rupture of an artificial dam. Among the casualties were two young souls identified as Arun Kumar, both aged 19 and 18 respectively.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horror as the artificial dam gave way. The impact was not limited to the collapse of the dwelling alone; the structural integrity of the Howraghat Bridge was compromised, causing it to sway perilously under the strain. The bustling crowd that had gathered on the bridge for various activities were also caught in the chaos, further exacerbating the gravity of the situation.

As Assam grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, questions loom over the adequacy of infrastructure measures and the preparedness of authorities to handle such crises in the future. The loss of young lives serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate the risks posed by natural disasters and ensure the safety and security of all residents in vulnerable regions.
