Four drown after boat carrying 40 overturns in northern India

A boat carrying 40 people overturned in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, leading to the death of four people.
This tragic incident happened in river Ganga near Maldepur area of Ballia district on May 22.
Shocking visuals showed people holding for dear life after the boat capsized. One of them seemed lifeless and floated. There was chaos in the situation. Few were seen trying to get up from the water by holding on to cloth. A young man was also seen holding a woman’s arms, preventing her from drowning into the water.
According to a report, the boat is said to have overturned due to overloading. People had gathered at the ghat for ‘mundan’ (shaving of heads) of their children. Three people have confirmed to be dead and four others have been left injured. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital with their condition reportedly being stable. It was learnt that there was a technical fault in the boat’s engine which caused it stop in the middle of the river.
Passengers then reportedly rushed out of the boar which led it to overturn. Senior officials rushed to the spot after learning about this incident. The overturned boat was spotted by policemen and local divers who proceeded to help.
