Heavy rain wreaks havoc in southern India, causing injuries and disruption

Torrential rain, accompanied by fierce winds, wreaked havoc across various districts of southern India’s Telangana, claiming casualties and disrupting normal life.

The incident took place in several parts of Telangana including Hyderabad, Medak district and in Warangal district on May 7.

Visuals showed in one clip, due to heavy rain, a wall collapsed, trapping people underneath, resulting in casualties. In another clip, a man was injured after being struck by a falling tree.

The downpour, which lasted for an hour on Tuesday evening, led to chaos as it inundated roads, uprooted trees, and caused traffic snarls in several areas. The inclement weather resulted in tragic fatalities, with two construction workers losing their lives in a wall collapse at a poultry farm in Medak district. Identified as Subrahmanyam (45) and N. Nagu (35), their demise cast a somber shadow over the region.

Tragedy struck again in Warangal district when a passerby was fatally struck by a falling tree near Katralaya village on the National Highway in Wardhannapet mandal. Meanwhile, in Hyderabad’s Bahadurpura area, a person succumbed to electrocution after inadvertently touching an electric pole amidst the tumultuous weather.

As emergency teams from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) mobilized to clear stagnant water and fallen debris, the rain-induced chaos persisted, causing significant disruptions to vehicular movement. Traffic congestion plagued central areas of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as well as key IT hubs like Madhapur and Gachibowli.

The adverse weather conditions also impacted the ongoing election campaign, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s public meeting in Karimnagar bearing the brunt of the storm. Strong winds dismantled tents and damaged seating arrangements, forcing the cancellation of the event.

With the Met office forecasting further rain and thunderstorms in the coming days, residents and authorities brace themselves for continued disruptions and potential challenges in navigating the aftermath of nature’s fury.
