Northern India’s hit-and-run: lawyer crushed after trying to stop car

In a tragic hit-and-run incident in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh a lawyer and irrigation department employee was fatally struck by a car while attempting to stop the vehicle following a collision.

The incident took place near Raina Market in Kanpur June 23.

Visuals showed on a busy road, a group of people were trying to stop a car from moving forward. Among them, a man standing in front of the car was suddenly run over by the driver, who then sped away from the scene. After being struck, the man lay there, covered in blood.

The victim, identified as 48-year-old Ravindra Tiwari, succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

According to reports the reckless speeding car, reportedly driven by intoxicated individuals, struck another vehicle near Raina Market. When Ravindra Tiwari, who was returning home, tried to intervene and stop the car, he was brutally run over. The incident, captured on video, shows Tiwari being dragged for approximately 50 meters by the speeding Hyundai Venue (license plate UP 78GZ1898) before being left lifeless on the road.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying moment, highlighting the victim’s brave but futile effort to halt the car. Despite the quick response from the police, who raided the driver’s residence, the suspect, identified as Shubham Vimal, remains at large.

The car, notably marked with “Uttar Pradesh Government,” has brought scrutiny upon law enforcement’s traffic regulation efficacy. Additionally, records indicate a pending fine of two thousand rupees against the vehicle for an earlier violation.

Ravindra Tiwari, who resided in Nawabganj and also had a home in FM Colony, was transported to LLR Hospital by his wife, Manju Tiwari, following the incident. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The police, led by DCP Central R.S. Gautam, are actively pursuing the culprits and have assured the public of imminent arrests. The community mourns the loss of Tiwari, remembered as a dedicated employee and advocate.
