Rise in water level of Godavari river leads to traffic stoppages in several areas of southern India

Traffic was brought to a halt in several areas after water flooded the roads following the Godavari river swelling up due to heavy rainfall in southern India’s Telangana.

This happened in Bhadrachalam located in Bhadradi Kothagudem district of the state on July 29 at 10 am IST.

Visuals showed the river in spate with the whole area completely flooded. Water in the Godavari river had risen above normal levels leaving the nearby areas flooded. A space meant for people to stand near the river was almost under the water with only its railings visible. A road was also partially flooded as a result of the rise in water level. It was learnt that the water level at Bhadrachalam was 54.50 feet. A marker confirmed this development and a third danger alert reportedly has been issued in the area. Traffic has been brought to a halt from Bhadrachalam to Dummugudem Charla.

The flood water has come up on the National Highway at Rayanna Peta. Traffic from Bhadrachalam to Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh has also been stopped. It has to be kept in mind that a lot of areas in the whole of southern India has been left flooded with heavy rainfall wreaking havoc this monsoon. Several roads have been affected either due to flood or rainfall-triggered landslides.
