UPDATE: Sloth bear creates stir as it enters village in southern India, rescued

A bear rescued after it  created quite a stir after it strayed into an abandoned house in a village in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh.

This incident took place in Vajrapukotturu mandal of Srikakulam district of the state on April 2.

Visuals showed the bear sitting inside the house. After a long struggle from the forest department it was put inside a big iron box. It was carried out of the house and put on the back of a mini truck. A huge crowd had gathered to see the rescue operation after it created havoc among the locals.

Authorities from the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), working in collaboration with officials from the Srikakulam District Forest Department, have effectively rescued a sloth bear.
It was also learnt that two villagers had lost their lives in a similar scenario where a bear had appeared in the village.

Curator Nandani Salaria of IGZP reported that upon the initial body examination of the bear, veterinary doctors discovered some injuries. Following the administration of primary treatment, the bear was transported to the zoo and accommodated in the Animal Rescue Centre (ARC).

The IGZP team is closely overseeing the animal’s care, ensuring it receives a balanced diet, appropriate veterinary treatment, and engaging enrichment activities to support both its physical and mental well-being, she stated. The curator also mentioned that the veterinary team plans to conduct additional tests to further assess the animal’s health condition.
