Five people lose their lives after massive landslide hits taxi parking lot in northern India

Five people, including a four-month-old infant, died after a massive landslide hit a parking lot in northern India’s Uttarakhand.

This tragic incident took place in Chamba town of Tehri Garhwal district on August 21.

 

Visuals showed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) officials at work as they attempted to take out the people from underneath the rubble. They used excavators as well as were seen hammering at the rubble to break down the rocks and rescue the people. An electric saw was also used to cut open the rocks under which people were buried, with one of them being seen trapped under the debris. Later, they were seen rushing the victims to the ambulance which took them to the hospital.

A massive chunk of debris rolled down a hilly area after a landslide and landed straight on the parking lot, where all these people were present. The deceased were inside of a car that got crushed and buried under the rubble and they have been identified as Poonam Khanduri, 30, Saraswati Khanduri, 32, Sharwal Khanduri, the infant Prakash and Sohan Singh Rawat.

As per a report, almost six vehicles were parked in the space which got hit by the rubble from the landslide. People who were around in the area were evacuated from the space as a safety measure.
