Two freight trains collided in northern India’s Punjab, causing serious injuries to two loco pilots. The incident disrupted a passenger train’s journey but resulted in no fatalities.

The incident took place near Madhopur in Fatehgarh Sahib district on June 2.

Nearby, a few railway workers were inspecting the scene, examining the damage and trying to understand what had happened. The area looked chaotic and damaged.

According to reports early Sunday morning, a significant railway accident occurred near Madhopur in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district. Two coal-laden freight trains collided, resulting in serious injuries to two loco pilots, who were immediately transported to the hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported as critical, and they have been referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

According to Ratan Lal, a police officer from the Government Railway Police (GRP) Sirhind police station, they received information about the accident at approximately 3:45 AM. Upon arrival at the scene, the authorities found two injured loco pilots, who were promptly admitted to the civil hospital in Fatehgarh Sahib. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.

The accident occurred on the dedicated freight corridor track near New Sirhind station. The collision happened when an engine detached from one of the stationary coal-laden trains and struck the other train. Subsequently, the engine overturned and got entangled with a passenger train, the Summer Special, traveling from Ambala to Jammu Tawi. Despite the incident, the passenger train was equipped with another engine and continued its journey without further delays.

Upon receiving news of the accident, railway employees quickly arrived at the scene and rescued the trapped loco pilots, identified as Vikas Kumar and Himanshu Kumar from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, by breaking the engine’s windows. Both pilots were in critical condition and were rushed to the hospital.

Following the accident, senior officials from the Ambala Division, including the DRM of Railways, GRP, and RPF, inspected the site and ordered an investigation into the cause of the collision.
