Major landslide halts traffic at northern India, strands hundreds of vehicles

A significant landslide on a crucial roadway has brought vehicular movement to a standstill in northern India’s Himachal Pradesh, trapping numerous vehicles and causing travel disruptions.

The incident took place on Chamba-Holi Road in Tehri district on April 22.

Visuals showed massive boulders were crumbling down from the mountain on the highway, accompanied by cascades of debris, effectively blocking the road passage.

A major landslide occurred on Chamba-Holi Road, causing the suspension of vehicular movement due to the road being blocked with large boulders and heavy debris. Hundreds of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the road. Rescue operations underway.

It is noteworthy that this is the third instance within a span of six months when vehicular movement has been halted due to landslides on this stretch of road. Additionally, buses departing for Kangra district and Chamba and Bharmour are also stuck here since Wednesday morning, leaving passengers stranded midway. So far, the Public Works Department has not been able to initiate road clearance work to restore traffic.
