A portion of the roof of Airport’s Terminal-1 collapsed in northern India’s Delhi due to heavy rains, injuring five people.

The incident took place at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on June 28.

Visuals showed after the roof wall of Terminal-1 collapsed, the entire structure lay crumbled on the ground, crushing and severely damaging the parked cars and taxis beneath it. Rainwater had accumulated in the area, adding to the chaos. A crowd of people had gathered a short distance from the incident, observing the aftermath.

Speaking to Newslions, the Director of Delhi Fire Services Atul Garg said, the heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning struck Delhi and the National Capital Region early Friday morning, leading to the tragic collapse of a portion of the roof. The incident resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to five others.

The collapse occurred around 5:30 am, damaging cars, including taxis, parked in the pick-up and drop-off area of the terminal. In addition to the roof sheet, support beams also fell, exacerbating the damage. Three fire tenders were dispatched to the scene following a distress call received by the DFS.

Rescue operations were promptly conducted to ensure no one was trapped in the damaged vehicles. One of the injured individuals was extricated from a car struck by a fallen iron beam. The injured were rushed to Medanta Hospital near the airport, where one person later succumbed to their injuries.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI) Usha Rangnani stated that traffic heading to T-1 departure has been diverted at the CISF check post towards T-1 arrival to manage the situation.
