Two lives lost after bus falls off-road in northern India

Two people died and others were left injured after a bus, carrying 42 passengers, veered off a road and fell into a 20-metre deep gorge in northern India’s Uttarakhand.

This incident happened on the Haridwar-Najibabad national highway near Haridwar on May 31.

 

Visuals showed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team at work. They were seen pulling out one of the injured passengers from the bus. They also carried away the injured away from the spot of the accident towards the road. Officials from the fire department and police were also present at the spot. The front portion of the overturned Uttarakhand Transport Corporation Roadways bus was completely shattered. According to a report, the bus was travelling from Rupadia towards Haridwar when this accident happened. The driver reportedly lost control and the bus broke the side iron railing, before falling into the gorge.

The deceased include the bus conductor, a 35-year-old named Vishwas Bahadur and a 10-month infant. “37 patients were immediately admitted to the district hospital, two were declared brought dead, including a 10-month infant and bus conductor. Four critically injured persons were referred to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh,” said Juhi Manral, the Circle (city) officer.
