A woman narrowly escaped being run over by a car in a chain-snatching attempt in southern India’s Tamil Nadu.

The incident took place in Coimbatore city on May 15.

Visuals showed a white car without any registration number approaching the victim. As the car came close to her, a man sitting on the front passenger seat leaned out from the vehicle and grabbed her chain. The woman quickly held her hands close to her neck and resisted the snatching attempt.

The victim has been identified as R Kausalya, a resident of Peelamedu.

The car dragged her along for a few metres and she fell down, having a close shave with the rear left wheel of the car.

A case has been registered under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“We are on the course to identify the people behind this act. We have followed up with Irugur. The vehicle used appears to be a private cab. The woman suffered bruises due to the fall, but otherwise, she is fine,” Inspector Meenambigai said.
